Sustainability at Giant

Doing what’s right for our people and our communities

At Giant, we’ve always believed that being a good neighbor means taking care of more than just what’s in our stores.

It means reducing waste, supporting our communities, and helping make it easier for our customers to shop in ways that feel good — for their families and for the world around them.

Here’s how every store, every day, contributes to building a more sustainable food system.

Reducing food waste, every day

Good food shouldn't go to waste. That's why we're focused on finding better ways to keep food out of landfills.

Giving food to people who need it

We donate unsold, wholesome food to local organizations across the communities we serve — helping turn our surplus into meals for our neighbors.

Helping customers save money

You’ll often find discounted items in-store that are close to sell-by date, but still perfectly good to enjoy. It’s a simple way to allow you to save money while reducing our waste.

Giving food a second life

Through our partnership with Divert, unsold food is:

  • Converted into renewable energy
  • Repurposed into nutrient-rich soil amendments

This creates a circular system that reduces landfill waste and lowers emissions.

Supporting healthier communities

We make healthier food choices accessible, inspire a healthier lifestyle and address food insecurity in the communities we serve.

Fighting hunger locally

From food donations to long-standing partnerships with local nonprofits, we’re working to make sure more families have access to the food they need.

We partner with Feeding America to ensure unused food is donated to a food bank that is local to the store. In honor of the anniversary of our 90th year in business, Giant donated $990,000 to food banks serving the D.C., Maryland, Delaware and Virgina area.

Creating spaces for wellness

Through our Healthy Living efforts, we’re bringing nutrition education, wellness programming and community support into our stores and neighborhoods.

Our Healthy Living initiatives bring:

  • Nutrition education: Healthy Living Podcast
  • Wellness programming: Cook-alongs
  • Community support spaces: Healthy Living Center in Ward 8
